Midterm Take Home Exam

Name:  Zoe Lang    Date:  10/18/16

1.  Your camera tells you that 1/125 @ F11 is the correct exposure.  List two other exposures that would allow you to bracket around this reading.  1/125 @F16, 1/125 @F8

2.  Fill in the intermittent apertures.
    F2 F2.8 F4 F5.6 F8 F11 F16 F22

3.  Fill in the intermittent shutter speeds.
   1sec 1/2sec 1/4sec 1/8sec 1/15sec 1/30sec 1/60sec 1/125sec 1/250sec 1/500sec 1/1000 sec

4.  F22 would produce a shallower depth of field than F8. = True

5.  While photographing a scene, the camera shows that 1/250 @ F16 will produce a correct exposure.
Give two equivalent exposures for this reading.  1/500 @F11, 1/125 @F22

6.  Which shutter speed would best stop a car moving across the frame. A) 1/1000 sec B) 1/30 sec C) 1/4000 sec D) 1/60 sec

7.  Dodging is the global adjustment that will darken areas of your image. = False

8.An ISO rating of 400 is more sensitive to light than 800. = False

9.  What is the difference between global and local adjustments?
Global Adjustments are applied to your entire image, some of these tools are; adaptive exposure, details, color, noise, and curve tool. Local Adjustments are not applied to the whole image, but rather “locally” to a particular section of the image. Tools under this category include dodge, burn, brush, and smooth.

10.  How many mega pixels you need to make a 8x12 print at 360 ppi?  12 mega pixels

11.  Name two tools in Photoshop you can use to adjust the density (brightness) of your image.  Brightness/Contrast Adjustment Layer Tool, Levels Tool

12.  Name three tools you can use in Photoshop to change the color of your image.  Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer Tool, Photo Filter, Color Balance

13.  What is the best file type to use when emailing or posting pictures to the web?  JPG

14.  What is the advantage of using adjustment layers?
You are able to adjust the effects made by them at any time as well as create masks while using them. You can also use them with blend modes.

15.  What color workspace is best used when editing photographs?
It depends on what you’re are using the photographs for. If for the web you should use RGB, but if you are planning on printing the images, CMYK.

16.  Histogram is a graphic representation of your image and can also be used to judge for correct exposure.

17.  Name two tools in Camera Raw you can use to change the density of your image.
(If you are talking about in Camera Raw there is a “Density” Brush that can effect selected parts of the image, however we did not cover this in class.) So, I am assuming you mean things such as Contrast, Shadows, and Highlights?

18. Name two tools in Camera Raw you can use to change the color of your image.  Temperature and Tint

19.  What is exposing to the right and what is its advantage.
It makes the image lighter and more over exposed. It has the ability to lighten up a dark photograph potentially revealing more details.

20.  Draw a basic histogram for an underexposed image.

21.  Draw a basic histogram for an overexposed image.

22.  Draw a basic histogram for a correctly exposed image.

23.  What is the best file to use as a layered working file in Photoshop?
(I am not sure what this question is asking, because of the wording,) but the file type for Photoshop is PSD, and the best file to use from photography to edit in Photoshop is RAW files.

24.  Name two advantages of having a larger digital sensor.
Larger digital sensors generally provide a higher resolution, and dynamic range will likely be increased with larger image sensors. It can also mean less diffraction and reduce crop factor.

25.  Pixels of unrelated color and/or brightness to surrounding pixels are known as Noise.

26.  Name two factors that would cause noise.  A larger ISO number will create more noise in the image, and sharpening an image too much in Photoshop will cause noise.

27.  In camera raw what is the difference between the Vibrance controls and the Saturation controls.
Saturation is a uniform bumping up the intensity of all colors in an image, regardless of the starting point of the colors. Over saturation can cause skin tones too look too orange and unnatural. Vibrance is a smart-tool which increases the intensity of more muted colors and leaves the already well-saturated colors alone. It also prevents skin tones from becoming overly saturated and unnatural.

28.  Images made of pixels are known as vector based images. = False

29.  Name two tools you can use to retouch a photograph.  Spot Healing Brush Tool, Patch Tool, and Healing Brush Tool

30.  Name three tools you can use to make a selection. Quick Selection Tool, Magic Wand Tool, Lasso Tools, and Marque Tools

31.  Name two tools in Camera Raw can you use to adjust a particular area of an image.  Shadows and Highlights (they effect only a certain area of the image).

32.  When editing an image what does the term “clipping” mean.  i.e. highlight clipping.
Clipping is a result of capturing or processing an image where the intensity in a certain area falls outside the minimum and maximum intensity which can be represented. It is an instance of signal clipping in the image domain. (If you are particularly talking about clipping masks, then the definition would be a tool allowing the user to show and hide different parts of a layer.)

33.  Name two advantages to shooting with a raw file.
It’s the highest level of quality, and records the highest levels of brightness making it easy to correct over or under exposed images. There are greater details and you can work with non-destructive editing.

34.  What software is best used to get the images from your camera onto your computer?  Bridge is the easiest way to take images from your camera to the computer software wise.

35.  What is the best way to erase areas in an image?  By using the masking tool, you can erase areas of an image and then if needed can undo or edit the erasable areas later.

36.  Name two controls in Camera Raw used to recover image detail.  Clarity and Exposure

Bonus  +1 each

1.What year was the first digital camera produced?  1975

2.What is the temperature scale used to measure color temperature in photography?  Kelvin

3.What president is on the $100 bill?  Benjamin Franklin is on the $100 dollar bill, but he was not a president.
